Micro/NanoCapsule Affinity Sensors

These capsules represent one embodiment of our sensors intended for dermal implantation. We have developed prototype sensors using glucose as a model analyte, where a protein receptor with high selectivity for glucose is used. By attaching molecular tags to our binding protein and/or a competing ligand (e.g. dextran), we can optically monitor the amount of glucose present in a sample. Our sensors employ specialized nanofilms to encapsulate the sensing reagents, enabling continuous, reversible response to glucose changes over a desired range (see response).

Competitive-binding sensing reagents are entrapped within hollow capsules, which retain the large macromolecules while allowing the small target analytes to diffuse freely into and out of the capsules.
