Enzymatic Microparticle Biosensors

These microparticles represent one embodiment of our sensors intended for dermal implantation. We have developed prototype sensors using glucose as a model analyte. The oxidation of glucose is catalyzed by an enyzme, glucose oxidase, which consumes oxygen in proportion to glucose concentration. Oxygen is monitored optically with a long-lifetime phosphor, which is excited with green light from an LED and emits orange and red light (see spectra below). Our sensors employ specialized nanofilm coatings to control glucose transport, resulting in the required balance of diffusion and reaction to achieve high sensitivity over the desired glucose range (see response).
