Multifunctional Nanofilms

Multilayer nanofilms (polyelectrolyte multilayers, PEMs) are attractive for modifying surfaces to achieve desired properties. Our primary interests in PEMs are in biosensor membranes, which are particularly critical when precise control over the diffusion rate of analyte is required (as in enzymatic sensors). Because we are developing sensors intended for dermal implantation, we are also concerned with controlling the interaction between the surface of our particles/capsules and the body (AKA the bio/material response). Thus, we study PEM permeability and the adsorption of proteins on their surfaces.

Nanofilm coatings containing grafted PEG exhbit minimal protein adsorption, and sensors with these materials maintain glucose sensitivity after exposure to serum.
