Biomedical engineering is a discipline that integrates engineering principles and the study of the life sciences and medicine. Students in biomedical engineering develop engineering strategies to effectively solve challenging problems in medicine and biology.
This may sound strange, but Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M is one of the oldest new departments in the country. By that I mean we have been a degree granting program since 1972, and our undergraduate program has been ABET accredited since 1977, however, we did not become a Department until 2002. We are currently undergoing rapid growth as a Signature Program of the Dwight Look College of Engineering and of the University.
As you will see when you explore our web site our mission is to serve. Not only are our faculty outstanding leaders in the field of biomedical engineering they are committed, along with our excellent staff, to work toward our core mission of serving the students, the State of Texas, and the biomedical engineering profession as they continue to build the department into a nationally recognized program.
In terms of research, we have many biomedical engineering areas covered by our faculty but in particular have very strong graduate programs in the areas of biomedical optical sensing and imaging to the nanoscale and cardiovascular mechanics and mechanobiology. As we expand our faculty we are also looking to expand our core areas. Joining the faculty in research are a number of post-doc’s and graduate students. In addition, the undergraduate students in our program have many opportunities for research. The goal of our undergraduate program is to provide our students with quality education in the use of engineering and scientific principles, and in the methods for developing bioinstrumentation, biomaterials, diagnostic and therapeutic devices, and other technologies needed in medicine and life sciences. About one third of our undergraduates go to work in industry, one third to medical school, and one third to graduate school. Our graduate students typically go to industry and academia.
We invite you to browse our web pages and learn more about our programs, research, staff, and faculty. We further welcome new students to our site and encourage anyone interested to contact us at bmen@tamu.edu
Sincerely,

Gerard L. Coté, Ph.D., P.E.
