Beginning in Fall 2006, the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Mays School of Business will offer a combined MBA degree program for students in the M.E. Biomedical Engineering Program.
Program Description
The BMEN/MBA graduates will be prepared for leadership roles in many areas of biomedical engineering and business with specific MBA training in leadership, management, human resources, teambuilding, communications, marketing, finance, accounting, strategy, and technology. The program also allows for an optional self-designed specialization for the BMEN student (may require enrollment in additional semesters). The goal of the BMEN/MBA Degree Program is to produce leaders in biomedical engineering and business. The Mays MBA Program web site, (http://mba.tamu.edu) contains more detailed information on the MBA program and curriculum.
Combined Program Timeline:
The BMEN/MBA program will allow BMEN students to enroll in the MBA program upon completion of the first year of the ME Biomedical Engineering program.
Students in the BMEN/MBA program will complete their MBA requirements in one calendar year, commencing in August. Students will complete 36 credit hours in the first nine months of the MBA program.
At the conclusion of the first nine months, 12 credit hours remain in order to complete the MBA Program: Business Consulting Project, Business Negotiations, Business Communications and Directed Study.
The Business Consulting Project is a five credit-hour course and is required to be 15 weeks in length. BMEN students will work with a team of fellow BMEN students or DVM/MBA students over the summer on a project in coordination with the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Mays Business School. The Business Negotiations course (three credit hours) is usually offered in the summer and fall semesters and can be taken any time. Additionally, students will receive credit for the Business Communications (three credit hours) and Directed Study (one credit hour) courses through meeting the requirements of the first year curriculum and the Business Consulting Project.
It is expected that the faculty of the Department of Biomedical Engineering will identify and develop Business Consulting Projects for BMEN/MBA students. Projects should be developed by March for the subsequent summer following the first year of enrollment.
Student Application Process:
BMEN students interested in pursuing the BMEN/MBA program should visit with the coordinator of the ME/MBA program to discuss the BMEN/MBA program and secure a letter of recommendation. The letter of recommendation will initiate the application to the MBA Program.
BMEN students should complete Mays MBA application materials: The online application may be found on the Mays MBA web site (http://mba.tamu.edu). For this combined program, valid GRE scores are accepted in place of GMAT scores.
Because ME Biomedical Engineering students are currently enrolled at Texas A&M, it is not necessary to pay a second application fee. BMEN students are instructed to contact the Mays MBA Program Office to finalize the submission of the application.
The Mays MBA Program Office will review the application and contact the BMEN student for an interview as appropriate. An admissions decision will be made shortly after the interview. BMEN/MBA applicants will be evaluated on a competitive basis with other MBA applicants. In addition to other requirements, Mays MBA Program normally requires significant work experience for admission. Inernships, co-op experiences, and other professional work experience can be considered. No guarantee of admission is made to any candidate. Enrollment of BMEN/MBA students in the MBA program is limited to five per year.
Priority consideration for admission and scholarship support is given to students who apply prior to the February 1 deadline. Applications will be accepted and considered through May 31.
