Optical and Molecular Imaging Lab

The Optical and Molecular Imaging Laboratory, led by Prof. Brian Applegate, seeks to develop novel high-resolution optical and molecular imaging techniques and apply them to important biomedical problems. Optical imaging offers exquisite spatial resolution and access to some of the strongest light-matter interactions. This combined with its relative low cost (compared to other medical imaging technologies) has fostered the drive to develop this technology. Applications include monitoring and diagnosis of disease (e.g. optical biopsy) and small animal imaging in animal models of disease.

The work in the laboratory ranges from system and technology development to the application of the technologies to timely biomedical problems. This type of research necessitates a multidisciplinary approach, hence we routinely collaborate with researchers and clinicians in other departments and institutions.
