“We work with materials with dimensions of nanometers to microns. These things are smaller than we can see, yet we have found ways to put materials together at that scale to make multifunctional devices. That is exciting in itself, but the promise that the biosensors we create may someday be used regularly in the diagnosis and management disease is what really keeps us motivated.

Biography
Dr. McShane moved around the U.S. and Europe before moving from California to attend Texas A&M University in 1990. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Bioengineering from Texas A&M University in 1994. As an undergraduate, he participated in a two-semester co-op program at the National Institutes of Health, and became interested in pursuing research for a career. He received a Whitaker Foundation biomedical engineering predoctoral fellowship and, in 1999, he received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Texas A&M University, with an emphasis in biomedical optics. From 1999-2006, Dr. McShane was on the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering and the Institute for Micromanufacturing at Louisiana Tech University. In 2006, he joined Texas A&M University as an Associate Professor in the Biomedical Engineering Department.
