“Our research combines structures on the nano- and micro-scale to enable new methods in the area of biomedical optics. By including both materials synthesis and optics in the research group, we are able to design and fabricate optical probes for novel approaches to biomedical imaging and sensing.

Biography
Dr. Meissner was born in Ft. Rucker, Alabama and spent his youth moving around the United States and Europe as an Army brat. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University in 1987. In 1994, he received his Ph.D. in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona. He then served as a postdoctoral appointee at Sandia National Laboratories from 1994-1995. From 1995-2000, Dr. Meissner sought his fortune in the area of noninvasive glucose diagnostics with two small companies. Having not found his pot of gold, Dr. Meissner returned to the academic world in 2000 and served as research faculty with the Applied Biosciences Center at Virginia Tech. In 2004, he joined Texas A&M University as an Assistant Professor in the Biomedical Engineering Department. His research is centered in the areas of biomedical optics and nanostructured materials. He has two issued patents.
